Bought the Smiths album 'the queen is dead' for my birthday & it's such a great CD. I worked in a record store (remember those!?) when this came out in 86 & remember buying it on vinyl at the time. After 20+ years it hasn't aged a day & still sounds great, so go & spend a few quid on a copy & kick back & enjoy the fantastic, often funny, song writing & great melodies, it's worth every penny.
Or if your a tight git then go see I-tunes, Ares or whatever his name is for the ripped, compressed & rubbish sounding MPfree version...

'The Queen is Dead' And it's so lonely on a limb
ReplyDeleteRemember the tee shirts :-)
Yea nice throw E.
One of my favourite Smiths albums gets a mention on the blog !!
Their best album ever pushed the Smiths to new musical and lyrical heights.
Its a unique blend of music style encompassing everything from British Invasion to rockabilly with eclectic jangle pop and vocal charisma.
Stephen Street co-produced this this album with Morrissey and is also one of my favourite musician / producers. Maybe better known for his work in Reggae with Black Uhuru and King Sunny Ade on the 80's Island records label. 90's work with Stephen Duffy and the supreme Durutti !!
More than just a self-pitying sap, this is a clever , witty satire on British social mores and state of a nation.
Some of Morrisseys best effecting songs such as the wistful ' The Boy with the thorn in his side' and the epic ' There is a light that never goes out' are the foundation in the impact of this lasting album.
agreed ;-)
ReplyDeleteAlthough my fave Smiths tune has to go to 'last night I dreamt that somebody loved me' from the 'Strangeways' album...
